Often in our life we might need to change our residence. Sometimes it is because of our wish for a new atmosphere and sometimes our situations demand it. Whatever the reason might be, moving to a new home is an exciting as well as a busy time for us.
When moving to a new home, there are so many things to get done and often we miss many of them. But no need to worry, we are here to help. Here are few important things which you must do, when you are moving to a new home.
Make sure all the necessities are available in your new home
This is something which you should do before of moving. Make sure you have water and power in your new home. You should disconnect the energy in the previous tenants name and reconnect it in your own name. Make sure you do this just before you move so the previous tenants won’t be charged for your energy usage and vice versa. Also make necessary arrangements for internet connection in your new place. These are absolute necessities which you need at your new home. Without these, spending even a day could be difficult no matter how sweet great new home is.
Change your address
This is a no brainer. Everyone knows they have to change their address when moving to a new place. However you should do this as early as possible so that you don’t have to rely on the new tenants in your old home to forward your mails. Notify the post office immediately about your new address and all other government bodies individually. Also, contact your car insurance and registration provider to change your address.
Have your new house professionally cleaned
Usually, most properties will be given a professional clean before the previous owners or tenants move out. But sometimes a house will be unused or empty for an extended period of time, so it needs another clean before you move in. In that case, you should hire a professional cleaners who specialize in final cleans and make them do a thorough job on the carpets, kitchen and bathroom.
Renew your house and contents insurance
When you move, it is important to contact your insurance provider to make sure you are covered for the duration of the move. Your current home insurance policy should cease the day after you move out and your next insurance policy should start the day before you move out. So before you move in, get a home insurance as well as home contents insurance so as to keep your new home and valuables safe.
Prepare an unpacking box
An ‘unpacking’ box is something which will help you in unpacking. This box should contain any tools you might need to construct furniture, labeled zip lock bags with screws from furniture you dismantled in the move, scissors, screwdrivers, masking tape, dust cloths and glue. Having all these items in the same box will save your time and sanity while setting up your new home.
Pack a ‘first night’ box
When you are moving, chances are that you won’t finish unpacking the first day itself. So a ‘first night’ box can help you in avoiding all the chaos that can happen during your first night at your new place. It should contain a change of clothing, basic toiletries, toilet paper, pajamas, towels, bed linen and any other essentials you might require.
